We chose the Ovation 3 for our Round the World trip largely for its speed and endurance. We have flown our 1992 M20J for a number of years in Thailand and it has proven to be a very reliable cross country airplane.
We named the airplane “Nang Fah”. Translated from Thai “Nang Fah” means “Angel"
The Ovation has the same advanced Garmin 1000 avionics as Cirrus, Columbia, Diamond, Cessna and most other modern aircraft. The Continental IO 550 engine is installed in all three of the “speed leaders” – Mooney, Cirrus and Columbia. So nothing is unique about Mooney here.
From our past experience, we like the proven design of the Mooney airframe; perfected over many years. Other owners, who prefer more modern comfort, may like the composite materials and larger, luxurious interiors of Cirrus and Columbia . There is a big difference so choose the one the suits you carefully!
Don't fall into the speed trap which seems to be a preoccupation of these manufacturers. These are all fast airplanes; all probably “fast enough” for most amateur general aviation usage. Endurance is important for round the world trips but probably not such a big issue for day to day operations around home. I have not proven the endurance and range performance claimed by Mooney of the Ovation 3. Their 2400 nm endurance claim is wonderful; if it is practical under normal flight conditions will be key to whether I install ferry tanks for part of my flight.
While I have great confidence in the airplane, dealing with the Mooney Company has been difficult and disappointing. For a company in the business of providing luxury products, to high end customers, I find Mooney to be extremely unresponsive after the sale. Inquiries always require follow up. Information and communication is frequently wrong or misunderstood. (There are a few exceptions ie: Delivery Team.) My experiences have been frustrating, time consuming and costly.
While the airplane, and I believe the manufacturing team, is great the internal support systems at Mooney need a real shake up……..I hope for the sake of all Mooney Airplane lovers it happens soon.
